MFA Candidate: Studio Arts

Lily Bennett graduated with a BFA in ceramics at Sierra Nevada University in Incline Village, Nevada. She is currently in her first year of graduate school working towards an MFA in ceramics. About her work Lily states “My previous work explored the interconnection of memory related to one’s sense of place using an interdisciplinary approach. Focused on my ancestral history of cultivating the land and sea on Martha’s Vineyard. I used personal memories related to the culture and history of the island to create a narrative through sculpture and installations. Like the tides in an ocean, I ebb and flow from 3D to 2D work many times using clay as the anchor. I am currently interested in using materials and metaphors, to explore the signs and symbols of navigation to further question our relation to place. Looking at bird migration patterns, and how they navigate north to south in contrast to how we use a buoy to find our way home from the open ocean.”
