Art Education

The art education program prepares students for careers as art teachers in the P-12 classroom in Montana and around the country. Our program emphasizes an understanding of arts and visual culture in a global, culturally diverse, and technological society. Future teachers learn through hands-on experience working with children; creating engaging curriculum for their classrooms that is research-based, interdisciplinary, and collaborative; and gaining critical understanding of theory, policy and practice of teaching and art.

To prepare for Teacher Certification, students take art history, studio, and art education course work in SVMA, and also complete education classes at the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education. The Art Education track provides undergraduate students with a well-rounded liberal arts education, studies in visual culture, and significant preparatory course work in the theory and practice of art education. The program is accredited the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Facilities

The facilities in the area of Art Education include a large sunlit classroom with a resource room and supply room/shop attached. The resource room houses a library, student samples, curricula, vendor information, and journals. The supply room has a kiln shop, tools and art materials for students’ field experiences.

Course of Study

Undergraduates earn either a B.A. or a B.F.A in Art, and additionally complete Art Education classes and College of Education below. After completion of this program, students are eligible for a Montana Teaching Licensure in Art K-12.
